Brother Martin Repeats!

Brother Martin scored 339 points and had champions in Mason Mauro, Paul Klein, Kyle Delaune, Daniel Albrecht and Ross Brister.  Jesuit placed second with 275 point, 12 points ahead of Catholic	Paul Klein earned his second state championship and the Division I Outstanding Wrestler Award.  The sophomore Crusader defeated returning state champion and 1012 Division I Outstanding Wrestler Jacob Dale with an unexpected early pin at 1:08.

Holy Cross Leaves Division II in Style

Holy Cross bowed out of Division II as state champions, scoring 280 points to outplace last year's state champion Teurlings Catholic by 42.  Live Oak placed third, 48.5 points behind the Rebels' 238.5, with 218 points.  The Tigers oddly only managed one individual state championship won by Alex Nicosia at 120 lbs., the senior's second title in a row.	Live Oak's Cody Hill won the Division II Outstanding Wrestler Award after his 18-2 technical Fall over Holy Cross' Colin Guerra.

Brusly Take Home Division III # 10

Brusly won their 10th Division III title handily, with 222 points, 45 points ahead of runners-up North Vermillion.  Wyatt LeJeune won his first state championship while Trevor Schermer won his third for the Panthers.	Trenton Pelloquin, a 2012 state champion who was oddly seeded 7th, won the 170 lbs. title anyway, defeating a surprising #8 seed Matt Adams of Fisher 11-7.  Pelloquin earned the Division III Outstanding Wrestler Awards for his performance.

Further analysis and commentary will ensue, but first the editor must learn the definition of "verbose" and then make a certain Division III coach rue the day he ever learned it in his home state of New York!

 Day Two after Semifinals:

"It's moving day at the..." 2013 LHSAA State Wrestling Championships, and seeds fell accordingly.  Four number #1 seeds and 13 #2 seeds lost their semifinal matches today, a tally that includes one Division I, two Division II and two Division III state champions. As expected after Day One, Brother Martin in Division I, Holy Cross in Division II and Brusly in Division III have insurmountable leads.  The Crusaders will repeat as Division I state champions.  The Tigers will forget about last season and treasure this one as they prepare to join the Division I ranks next season.  For the Panthers, this will be their 10th Division III championship in 14 years and perhaps a start to another long run of Brusly supremacy.

St. Paul's' David Englehardt hopes to repeat his performance is last year's finals...	...Holy Cross' George Benoit looks for a different outcome...	...and John Curtis' G'Corey Fullilove has newfound aspirations..

Division I:  The Crusaders have eight finalists in Mason Mauro, Paul Klein, Austin Meyn, Devin LeBlanc, Daniel Albrecht, Kyle Delaune, Yehia Riles and Ross Brister.  Expected to be in the finals were #2 seeds Dominic Casadaban and Tyler Robertson, but they accorded them selves quite well in the consolation rounds with each placing third.

Jesuit has a 18.5 lead over Catholic for runner-up.  Both have five finalists, but Catholic has the edge in number one seeds remaining.  James Claitor, Brandon Luckett and Miles Nash represent the Bears in that category, while only two Blue Jays, Mitch Capella and Manny Armour comprise #1-seed finalists for the Blue Jays.  The two only meet at 145 lbs. where #4 seed Efosa Eboigbe of Jesuit will meet #5 seed Sidney Rodriguez of Catholic.  The Bears really need Jesuit to lose all of their finals matches to secure the runner-up spot.

St. Paul's will place fourth and two of their finalists are unexpected, sort-of.  Connor Campo was a "given."  But returning state champion David Englehardt got past one of the wrestlers who have beaten him at 138 lbs. this season when he defeated Casadaban in the semifinals.  He'll face Claitor, who beat him by a point in the finals seconds of the Louisiana Classic semifinals.  It is tough to argue that Englehardt's presence is a surprise.  The same can be said of Jordan Peterson at 160 lbs. who defeated Brother Martin's Patrick Hoppe in the semifinals 6-3.  Hoppe had beaten Peterson at the St. Paul's Invitational, but Hoppe was "filling large shoes," so to speak, being at 160 lbs. at all, as he wrestled most of the season at 145 lbs.

Rummel lost two expected finalists when #1 seed Tyler Frame and #2 seed Matt Calcote fell in the semifinals.  But they were unexpectedly replaced by #3 seeds Devin Breaud (106 lbs.) and Michael Darwin (170 lbs.).  Both have losses to the finals opponents from Brother Martin.  Early in January Breaud lost to Mason Mauro 10-6, but he has performed great since then, including a 3rd-place finish at the Louisiana Classic.  Darwin took Brother Martin's Daniel Albrecht into overtime in their last match on January 5th.

Division II:  Holy Cross has nine wrestlers in the finals.  Three of them earned their spots by defeating high seeds in their weight classes.  Coaches Desormeaux, Bertot and the rest of Holy Cross coaches have done a brilliant job.  Division I will be a "step-up" for the Tigers next season, but very few are graduating this year.

Teurlings Catholic will switch places from last season when they outdueled the Tigers for the state championship.  Live Oak has third placed "locked up" just as tightly.  Each school have four finalists.

Division III: Brusly did their work getting to the semifinals and in the consolation rounds.  The Panthers have four finalists yet a 43.5 point lead over the second place team.

The title of Division III runner-up is still between North Vermillion, currently in second place with 169 points, and John Curtis, 3.5 points behind then at 165.5.  The Patriots are guaranteed to take second, though.  But it might just be the John Curtis Patriots who have four finalists while the North Vermillion Patriots only have three.  One of those matches, at 160 lbs., matches #2 seed Bruce Vincent of North Vermillion vs. #4 seed G'Corey Fullilove of John Curtis.  But each team has earlier finals matches to consider before putting too much priority on the head-to-head match-up.

Due to time constraints normal verbosity will be preempted with a simple synopsis:

• The favorites in each division lead after the first day;
• In Division I Brother Martin has a 28 point lead over Jesuit, who is hanging on tenaciously to a 3.5 lead over Catholic for second.  The Crusaders only lost one high-seed, #2 Tyler Robertson at 145 lbs.;
• Holy Cross, even without the services of an ill Dylan Soileau, has an 1001.5 point lead over defending Division II champion Teurlings Catholic;
• Brusly, some may be heard to say, is getting every break imaginable.  It is more likely their 20.5 point lead over #2 North Vermillion is a result of their rigorous schedule, including a lot of matches with out-of-state competitors.  The competition is great for the Panthers, but it may have resulted in some of them not being seeded according to their actual worth;
• Only two #1 seeds have been knocked out of the winners' bracket.  Both are in Division III.  Austin Bohne of Rayne (160 lbs.) and Baron Clofer of John Curtis (170 lbs.) fell to #8 seeds in the quarterfinals;
• #4 seeds got slaughtered by #5 seeds!  Three in Division III, four in Division II and eight in Division I.
• The MVP of the day goes to Division III's unseeded Donnie Evans of Bossier, who defeated a #7 seed and a #2 seed on his way the the 220 lbs. semifinals.

This is obviously not Jesuit's first rodeo...	Sigh...to do that and get a free t-shirt afterward, rather than physical therapy...
